Who Were the Nazarenes?

The first believers in Yeshua were a Jewish sect known as "Nazarenes" or in Hebrew "Netzarim" (Acts 24:5). The "church father" Jerome (4th Cent.) described these Nazarenes as those "...who accept Messiah in such a way that they do not cease to observe the old Law." (Jerome; On. Is. 8:14).

Josephus reports four main sects or schools of Judaism: Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and Zealots. The earliest followers of Jesus were known as Nazarenes, and perhaps later, Ebionites, and form an important part of the picture of Palestinian Jewish groups in late 2nd Temple times.

Is Nazarene Judaism the same as Messianic Judaism?

No, they are somewhat similar but not the same. Let me start by saying that there are several sects of Messianic believers that practice varied degrees of Judaism just as there are several sects of Pre-Messianic Jews and different denominations of Christians. Like any faith Messianic Judaism stretches from ultra-liberal to ultra-orthodox with varied degrees of man-made doctrine.

Nazarene (sect)

The Nazarene sect (Ναζωραίων from Hebrew נזרים) used in the Book of Acts, clearly referred to both Jewish and Gentile followers of Jesus' Apostles. A related term, ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΙ, were an early Jewish Christian sect similar to the Ebionites.
